- Joint Commission Journal: The April issue highlights the work of a team that developed a new metric called REACT (Rapid Escalation After Critical Transfer) to review clinical outcomes after pediatric rapid response events.
Highlights from the 2022 Physician Leader Forum
More than 370 physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals attended the two-day event, held from April 5-6. Some of the highlights included:
- Dr. Jonathan Perlin, the Joint Commission’s new President and CEO, sharing his vision for the priorities of the organization, his thoughts on the survey of the future, and requesting the participants’ help within the context of equity, economic challenges, and endurance.
- Dr. Brook Watts, Chief Quality and Safety Officer for The MetroHealth System, identified five urgent gaps in quality and safety, and ways to leverage lessons learned from the pandemic to move the needle on quality and safety.
- Dr. Lee Fleisher, Director of the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), shared CMS’ vision for quality and oversight in the endemic phase of the healthcare ecosystem.
- Mr. Robert Willard, President and CEO for the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), shared successful strategies for sustaining excellence in the nuclear power industry and how these methods can be applied to improving quality and safety in healthcare.
- During panel discussions, healthcare leaders offered their insights on two pressing issues – the workforce staffing crisis and preparing young clinicians to address healthcare disparities. For the April 5 panel discussion on the staffing crisis, Dr. Robyn Begley, CEO of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President for Workforce at the American Hospital Association, served as moderator. The panelists were:
- Dr. Anita Girard — CNO and Vice President of Nursing at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and President for the American Nurses Association of California.
- Dr. Darilyn Moyer — Executive Vice President and CEO of the American College of Physicians
- Dr. Deborah Trautman — President and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing
- Dr. Sylvain Trepanier — System Chief Nursing Officer for Providence St. Joseph Health
- On April 6, Dr. Janis Orlowski, Chief Health Care Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges, served as moderator for the discussion on how to help medical students prepare to tackle healthcare disparities. The panelists were:
- Dr. David Acosta — Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges
- Dr. William McDade — Chief Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Officer at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Sentinel Event data released for 2021
Sentinel event data for 2021 has been released covering 1,197 reviewed events with patient falls being the single largest reported harm event. The release includes the Top 10 most frequently reported sentinel events in 2021.
Comment on proposed requirements on reducing health care disparities
A field review is open until May 4 for new and revised requirements to reduce health care disparities for the hospital, critical access hospital, ambulatory health care, and behavioral health care and human services programs.

A new book aims to help organizations prevent patient suicides. It includes an analysis of what is required by the National Patient Safety Goal on suicide risk, best-practice suggestions from external authorities, and more.
